Charities and other nonprofit organizations across South Carolina are the true champions of the Verizon Heritage. Since 1987, the tournament has enabled the Foundation to contribute more than $16.6 million to such noteworthy organizations as Volunteers in Medicine of Hilton Head, Medical University of South Carolina, Deep Well, NAACP Housing Initiative, and The Penn Center.

Annual proceeds from the tournament continue to rise from one year to the next. In 1987, the Foundation awarded $133,695 to 18 organizations. In 1999, 65 organizations received more than $730,000. In 2000, the Foundation handed out $852,000 in grants to 102 organizations. In 2007 $1.8 million was distributed to more than 100 groups.
